How to Calculate Average, Mean, Median & Mode Online — Free (2026)

By Rui Barreira · Last updated: 18 June 2026

You can calculate the mean, median, mode, and range of any dataset instantly using the brevio Average Calculator — no signup, no upload, runs entirely in your browser. Paste a comma-separated list and get a complete descriptive statistics summary in one click.

Manual calculation of statistics is error-prone once the dataset exceeds a handful of numbers. The tool handles sorting, frequency counting, and rounding automatically so you get accurate results every time.

How to Use the Tool

  1. Open the brevio Average Calculator. No account required.
  2. Enter your numbers separated by commas. For example: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. You can also use spaces or newlines as separators.
  3. Click Calculate. The tool instantly shows count, sum, mean, median, mode, min, max, and range.

How the Statistics Are Calculated

The mean (arithmetic average) is the sum of all values divided by the count: mean = Σx / n. It is the most commonly used measure of central tendency, but it is sensitive to outliers — a single very large or small value pulls the mean significantly.

The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted in ascending order. For an even count of numbers, it is the average of the two middle values. The median is resistant to outliers, which makes it more representative than the mean for skewed datasets such as income distributions or house prices.

The mode is the value (or values) that appear most frequently. A dataset can have no mode (all values appear once), one mode (unimodal), or multiple modes (multimodal). The tool returns all modes when multiple values tie for highest frequency.

The range is the simplest measure of spread: range = max − min. It tells you how wide the spread of your data is, though it is affected entirely by the two extreme values.

Mean vs Median: When to Use Which

Use the mean when your data is symmetric and has no extreme outliers — for example, averaging test scores in a classroom or measuring the height of a sample. Use the median when your data is skewed or contains outliers — for example, household income (a few very high earners distort the mean) or house sale prices in a city. Most economic statistics use medians precisely because of this: the US Census Bureau reports median household income, not mean household income.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between mean and average?
They are the same thing in everyday use. "Average" usually refers to the arithmetic mean — the sum divided by the count. In statistics, there are other types of averages (geometric mean, harmonic mean), but the arithmetic mean is what most people mean by "average."
Can a dataset have more than one mode?
Yes. A dataset with two modes is bimodal, and with three or more is multimodal. If every value appears exactly once, the dataset has no mode. The tool lists all modes when they exist.
Does the order of numbers matter?
No. The mean, median, mode, and range are all order-independent. The tool sorts the values internally before computing the median — you do not need to sort your input first.
Is this calculator free to use?
Yes, completely free with no signup required. The calculation runs in your browser and no data is sent to any server.
