How to Calculate LTV:CAC Ratio (2026)

By Rui Barreira · Last updated: 18 June 2026

The LTV:CAC ratio compares how much revenue a customer generates over their lifetime (LTV) against what it cost to acquire them (CAC). It is the single most important health check for any subscription or recurring-revenue business. A ratio above 3:1 indicates a sustainable growth engine; below 1:1 means you are losing money on every customer you add. Use the Unit Economics Calculator to compute it instantly from your own numbers.

The Formulas

LTV is calculated as: Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) ÷ Churn Rate. If your average customer pays $80/month and 4% churn monthly, LTV = $80 ÷ 0.04 = $2,000. CAC is: Total Sales and Marketing Spend ÷ New Customers Acquired in the same period. If you spent $60,000 last quarter and acquired 150 customers, CAC = $400. The ratio is LTV ÷ CAC = $2,000 ÷ $400 = 5:1 — a strong result. You should also factor in gross margin: multiply LTV by your gross margin percentage to get the margin-adjusted LTV before dividing by CAC.

Benchmarks by Business Stage

There is no single correct LTV:CAC target — context matters. The table below shows widely used benchmarks across company stages and models.

Stage / ModelLTV:CAC TargetWhat It Signals
Early-stage SaaS1:1 – 2:1Acceptable while still learning CAC channels
Growth-stage SaaS3:1 – 5:1Healthy — standard investor benchmark
Enterprise SaaS5:1+High CAC offset by large, sticky contracts
E-commerce2:1 – 4:1Lower margins compress achievable LTV
Below 1:1Negative unit economicsFix before scaling — growth destroys value

Improving a Weak Ratio

You have two levers: increase LTV or reduce CAC. To raise LTV, target higher-value customer segments, reduce churn through improved onboarding and support, and grow ARPU via expansion revenue (upsells, seat growth). To reduce CAC, shift spend toward lower-cost channels like organic search and referrals, improve conversion rates at each funnel stage, and tighten sales cycles. The payback period — CAC divided by monthly contribution margin — is a useful companion metric: it tells you how quickly you recoup acquisition spend, which matters for cash flow even when the long-run ratio looks healthy.
