How to Calculate Running Pace (2026)
By Rui Barreira · Last updated: 18 June 2026
Running pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance — typically expressed as minutes per kilometre or minutes per mile. Knowing your pace lets you set realistic race targets, structure training runs correctly, and compare effort across different distances. Use the Running Pace Calculator to convert between pace, speed, and finish time instantly.
The core formula
Pace is calculated by dividing total time by distance: Pace = Time ÷ Distance. If you ran 10 km in 55 minutes, your pace is 5:30 per km. To convert between pace and speed in km/h, divide 60 by the pace in decimal minutes — a 5:30/km pace equals 60 ÷ 5.5 = 10.9 km/h. Converting between per-km and per-mile pace requires multiplying by 1.609 (km to miles) or 0.621 (miles to km). For example, 5:30/km is equivalent to 8:51/mile.
Common race pace reference table
The table below shows finish times for common race distances at a range of paces. Use it to pick a target pace for your next race or to understand what a given pace feels like over longer distances.
| Pace (min/km) | Speed (km/h) | 5 km | 10 km | Half marathon | Marathon |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4:00 | 15.0 | 20:00 | 40:00 | 1:24:05 | 2:48:11 |
| 4:30 | 13.3 | 22:30 | 45:00 | 1:34:35 | 3:09:11 |
| 5:00 | 12.0 | 25:00 | 50:00 | 1:45:06 | 3:30:11 |
| 5:30 | 10.9 | 27:30 | 55:00 | 1:55:36 | 3:51:12 |
| 6:00 | 10.0 | 30:00 | 1:00:00 | 2:06:06 | 4:12:12 |
| 6:30 | 9.2 | 32:30 | 1:05:00 | 2:16:37 | 4:33:13 |
Using pace to structure training
Most training plans define runs relative to a target race pace. Easy runs sit 60–90 seconds per km slower than your 10 km race pace — slow enough to hold a conversation. Tempo runs sit 10–20 seconds per km faster than half-marathon pace, targeting your lactate threshold. Interval sessions use 5 km pace or faster for short repeats of 400 m to 1,200 m with recovery jogs in between. Running every session at one effort level — usually a moderate "grey zone" pace — is the most common training mistake, and it both increases injury risk and limits adaptation. Knowing your pace anchors you to the right intensity for each session.
