How to Convert Text to Morse Code

  1. Open the Morse Code Converter. No account or installation required.
  2. Type or paste your text into the input field. The Morse code output updates live as you type.
  3. Review the output. Each letter is separated by a space; each word is separated by a forward slash (/).
  4. Copy the Morse code with the copy button and paste it wherever you need it.
  5. To decode Morse back to text, switch to decode mode, paste your dots and dashes, and the plain text appears immediately.

Morse Code Alphabet Reference

International Morse Code (ITU standard) represents each letter and digit as a sequence of short signals (dots, .) and long signals (dashes, -). A dash is three times the duration of a dot. The gap between letters is three dot-lengths; the gap between words is seven dot-lengths.

Worked Example: Encoding SOS

SOS is the international distress signal and one of the most recognisable Morse sequences. Each letter maps as follows: S is ..., O is ---, S is .... Written together with character spacing: ... --- .... In continuous transmission it appears as ...---... — three short, three long, three short — which is why it stands out even in noisy conditions.

A longer example: the word HELLO encodes to .... . .-.. .-.. ---. Each character is separated by a single space. The full sentence “HELLO WORLD” becomes .... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -.., with a / marking the word boundary.

Digits and Timing

Morse code covers all ten digits, each encoded as five elements. The pattern is regular: 1 is .----, 2 is ..---, 3 is ...--, 4 is ....-, 5 is ..... — then the pattern reverses, with 6 as -.... through to 0 as -----. Morse code is case-insensitive; there is no distinction between uppercase and lowercase letters.

Use the brevio Morse Code Converter to encode or decode any message instantly — no memorisation required.
