Every photo your phone or camera takes carries a hidden layer of data called EXIF metadata. It records the device make and model, the exact date and time of the shot, exposure and lens settings, image orientation, and, on many phones, the precise GPS coordinates of where you were standing. This information is invisible when you look at the picture, but it travels with the file. Anyone who receives the original image can read it with free tools, which is how a holiday photo can quietly reveal your home address or a daily routine.

This tool removes that metadata by re-encoding the image. It loads your JPEG, draws the pixels onto an HTML canvas, and exports a fresh JPEG from that canvas. The canvas holds only the visual data, none of the EXIF tags, so the exported file is born clean: no GPS, no timestamp, no camera model, no orientation flag. You get a picture that looks identical but carries none of the backstory. The output is saved at 95 percent JPEG quality, a setting that is visually indistinguishable from the original for almost every photo.

Stripping metadata is worth doing any time a photo leaves your trusted circle: before posting to a forum or marketplace listing, before emailing an image to someone you do not know well, or before publishing pictures of your home, children, or workplace. Many social platforms strip EXIF on upload, but not all do, and you cannot rely on it. Removing the data yourself first means you control exactly what travels with the file rather than trusting each destination to clean up after you.

This tool handles JPEG files specifically, because EXIF is a JPEG convention; PNG and WebP do not embed the same metadata block. One trade-off of the re-encode approach is that it removes the orientation tag along with everything else, so if your camera relied on that flag to display the photo upright, you may need to rotate it manually afterward. The entire process runs in your browser, so the photo is never uploaded to a server.
