This tool does two jobs at once: it works out a gratuity from a percentage and splits the resulting total evenly across a group. The tip is bill × (tip% / 100), the new total is the bill plus that tip, and the per-person share is the total divided by the number of people. So a 60 bill at 18% adds a 10.80 tip for a 70.80 total; split between three diners that is 23.60 each. Adjust any input — the bill, the tip percentage, or the headcount — and the figures recalculate immediately, which makes it easy to settle a restaurant bill at the table.

Tipping norms vary widely, so the right percentage depends on where you are and the service. In the United States, sit-down restaurant tips commonly run 15–20%, with 18% a typical default and more for exceptional service; counter service is often less or nothing. In much of Europe a service charge may already be included, in which case a small extra of 5–10% or simply rounding up is normal rather than a full US-style tip. The percentage here is always calculated on the bill amount you enter — decide separately whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total, since tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the common convention where sales tax is added on top.

For splitting, the tool divides equally, which suits a shared meal where everyone contributes the same. It also guards against dividing by zero by treating the group size as at least one, so the per-person figure always makes sense. Equal splitting is the simplest fair approach, but it is not always the fairest: if one person had a far pricier dish or several drinks, an even split can feel lopsided. In that case, total each person's own items first, then apply the tip percentage proportionally, or have the bigger spenders add a little extra to even things out.

A couple of practical notes. Per-person amounts rarely divide into round numbers, so it is common to round each share up slightly — the small surplus simply pads the tip. If a service charge is already printed on the bill, treat that as the tip and avoid adding a second one unless you intend to. This is a straightforward arithmetic helper with no tax handling or itemisation, and everything runs in your browser with nothing sent to a server.
