The PDF Page Numbers tool stamps a sequential number onto every page of a PDF, so a document that was assembled from separate parts or printed double-sided ends up with consistent, readable pagination. You drop in a single PDF, choose where the number should sit, and the tool writes the labels and hands back a new file. It is the kind of small finishing step that makes a contract, a report, or a court filing easier to reference, because anyone reading it can point to a specific page by number.

Each page receives a label in the form "3 / 12" — the current page followed by the total page count — set in 10-point Helvetica and drawn in a soft gray rather than stark black, so it reads as a footer mark instead of competing with your content. You pick from three placements: bottom center, bottom right, or top right. The tool positions the text 24 points in from the edges and, for the centered option, measures the actual width of the string so it lands exactly in the middle of the page regardless of paper size. Numbering always starts at 1 on the first page and runs to the last; there is no option yet to skip a cover page, start from a different number, or use roman numerals.

Because the work is done with pdf-lib directly on the page objects, the original layout, fonts, and images are left untouched — the number is simply added as a new text element on top of what is already there. The tool reads the real dimensions of each page individually, so a file that mixes portrait and landscape pages, or A4 and US Letter, still gets its numbers placed correctly relative to each page's own edges. The result downloads as numbered.pdf, generated entirely on your device with no upload.

A couple of things are worth keeping in mind. The number is drawn at a fixed position, so if your document already has dense content in that exact corner the label could overlap it; choosing a different placement usually solves this. The gray color and size are not adjustable in this version, which keeps the interface simple but means the look is consistent rather than customizable. For most reports, manuscripts, and scanned bundles the defaults are exactly what you want.
